About Fractal

Update 2018: Fractal programming suspended until further notice

Mission Statement

Fractal is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics) enrichment program that uses Participant-led, Inquiry-based Learning techniques for school-aged participants. Through fun, creative and engaging workshops, Fractal builds self-esteem, teamwork, knowledge base, and confidence in participants’ for their future educational experiences.

Our workshops are participant driven with the focus being on the individuals instead of a main learning objective. Participants are encourage to manipulate materials to figure out how they work independently and with each other. While there is an overall theme or concept for each workshop, we focus more on what the participants want to get out of the workshop rather than making sure they’re hitting the learning objectives-we’ve all had experiences where we’re all in the same room but learning something different; it’s important to us to capture all of those experiences and give voice to everyone’s learning and what they take away from the workshop.

Founder: Heather Wentler

I started Fractal as a way to help kids and teens build self-confidence and life skills through hands on and challenged based learning projects. The projects involve different STEAM disciplines to bridge connections between school and the real world. The goal of the Fractal curriculum and workshops are for participants to walk away with a sense of accomplishment and a brighter outlook in their future educational and life experiences.

I graduated from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater with a Bachelors in Elementary Education for Middle Childhood-Early Adolescence (Grades 1-8). During college I taught pre-school, and volunteered in numerous classrooms with students of various ages and ability ranges.
Currently I am a Substitute Teacher for Madison Metropolitan School District. Organizer of Madison SOUP, Co-founder of The Doyenne Group, Curriculum Design Coordinator for Filament Games, and serve on the Playful Learning Advisory Board.
